A legacy of power meets a bright future.
Expertise in our field also means a willingness to adapt in an industry requiring revolutionary solutions to solve modern problems. We’ve experienced a lot of change since we opened our first facility, but our commitment has never wavered.

Company History
Central Moloney is a company with a rich heritage.
1950
Our Origins
In 1949, CMI began in Pine Bluff, Arkansas as Larkin Lectro Products Company, makers of welding equipment and electric transformers. In 1952, the name changed to Central Transformer Corporation, as the company devoted itself solely to manufacturing distribution transformers.
1960
Expanding Our Reach
After experiencing dramatic growth with major utility customers, Central Transformer Corporation needed more manufacturing facilities. In 1965, Moloney Electric of St. Louis was acquired, which merged the company into Central Moloney Transformer Corporation. This acquisition placed Central Moloney Transformer Corporation among the top five manufacturers of electric transformers nationwide.
The real growth, however, was just beginning. In 1968, Colt Industries acquired Central Transformer Corporation to become a subsidiary of their widely diversified operation producing diesel engines, aircraft components, and other industrial products. Colt Industries later became known as Coltec Industries, and Central Moloney Transformer Division was announced as the new company name. We became a premier manufacturer of distribution transformers in the United States and continue that legacy today.
1970
Pioneering Innovation
Our tradition of innovation brought about the opportunity to expand into transformer components. So when Central Moloney Components Operation was founded in 1970, it was the beginning of a whole new line of innovative polymer products. Manufacturing capabilities now included casting, transfer molding, pressure gelation and thermoplastic injection molding, leading to many additions to our product line.
1980
Revolutionizing the Industry
In the mid-1980s, CMI was the first to introduce thermoplastic primary and secondary bushings to the transformer industry. The success of these bushings led to a complete transformation of these products across the industry. A range of revolutionary manufacturing processes allowed for extreme versatility in meeting customers’ needs and earned our status as not only a trusted manufacturer, but also an innovative one.
1990
Strength in Ownership
CMI had all of the ingredients to remain a strong leader in the transformer industry. The purchase of the company from Coltec Industries was announced in 1994, and Central Moloney, Inc. emerged. The “new” CMI maintained its financial strength, the willingness to adapt, a strong presence in the marketplace, and a long-standing tradition of services and value to our customers.
In 1998, we were poised to make history once again by converting to a one-hundred percent Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) corporation. With this action, all salaried employees gained an ownership role in the business.
2020
Expanding Our Legacy
CMI acquired Canada’s Cam Tran in 2024, the largest Canadian manufacturer of distribution transformers and the largest North American producer of amorphous metal transformers. This formed one of the largest distribution transformer manufacturing operations on the continent, which together employs around twelve hundred people across twelve facilities. As a combined company, CMI and Cam Tran continue to operate under the separate brands but leverage the capacity across the manufacturing footprint to support each company’s increasing product demand.
